Is there a rule-of-thumb for container size when cannabis container gardening?

I've heard of a rule-of-thumb of a minimum of 1/2 gallon of container size for every foot of vertical height of finished plant when growing cannabis in containers.

Is this correct or is this over simplified?

Is there a difference for species/strain?

How about indoors/outdoors?
